The Giant Cabbage

About the book ...

Moose discovers a very big cabbage in his garden that could win first prize at the Alaska State Fair. But there's a problem -- it's so huge he can't lift it! Various animal friends stop to help, and through teamwork and positive attitude, they succeed. An old Russian folktale about a large turnip inspired The Giant Cabbage, but this contemporary version uses verbal and visual twists that showcase its Alaska setting. Comical repetitions, fun words, and vivid animal characters bring the story to life, and there's even a recipe for a scrumptious cabbage stew to be cooked in a giant pot! ISBN: 978-1570613579 Publisher: Sasquatch Books, Seattle

The Sourdough Man

About the book ...

"I’m the Sourdough Man, and you can’t catch me!" Drawn from traditional European and North American versions of the Runaway Pancake and the Gingerbread Man, Alaska children’s author Chérie Stihler and illustrator Barbara Lavallee have collaborated to create the distinctly Alaskan version of this tale. Of course, it’s a runaway sourdough loaf that has come to life, and he is eluding all manner of creatures native to the great north: musk ox, lemmings, arctic hares, caribou, marmot, golden eagle. But the arctic fox, it turns out, is both cleverer and hungrier than all the other animals! Ages: birth to ten years ISBN: 978-1570615948 Publisher: Sasquatch Books, Seattle

The Cabin that Moose Built

About the book ...

Moose’s animal friends helped him haul a colossal cabbage to the state fair. Now, Moose and his pals are scrambling to build a snug cabin during Alaska’s short summer season. From the time the ground thaws in spring until the first snow falls isn’t much time for such a big project. The trials and tribulations of the dedicated, if haphazard, crew make for a delightful story, reinforcing the importance of teamwork and maintaining a positive attitude. Jeremiah Trammell’s charming illustrations depict the animals as they struggle with building a house together. Ages: 6 months to ten years ISBN: 978-1570614460 Publisher: Sasquatch Books, Seattle

Polar Polka

About the book ...

Ten polka-playing polar bears gather on an iceberg that’s big enough for a stage. The band begins to play, then suddenly — SNAP! — a chunk of the iceberg breaks off and one of the bears floats away. Undaunted, the now nine-member band strikes a chord when — POP! — there goes another piece, and another bear, too. Bear by bear, the band is eventually reduced to…none! How will the show go on? The bears’ clever solution provides a satisfying finale to this amusing learn-to-count story. Colorful illustrations depict whales, walrus, seals, and other Alaskan wildlife along with the furry musicians. Ages: birth to to eight years ISBN: 978-1570615207 Publisher: Sasquatch Books, Seattle

Wiggle, Waggle, WOOF!

About the book ...

This colorful and lively story centers on preparing a sled-dog team ready for a race. Children count paws, ears, and noses as the dogs eagerly await the starting gun. A sled-dog glossary and more help little ones learn mushing terminology, the parts of the rigging, and sled-dog facts. The cheerful text is excellent for reading aloud and makes for a wonderful way to get children excited about counting. Michael Bania's charming illustrations exude the happy canine enthusiasm for which Alaskan Huskies are known. Ages: birth to ten years ISBN: 978-1570615597 Publisher: Sasquatch Books, Seattle
